Chapter 28

Actually, Sarah wasn’t really upset.

She was a bit peeved, for nobody likes being blindsided.

But she and Dave had known the town wasn’t going to give up easily in their efforts to make them permanent residents.

They’d discussed that possibility a number of times and had even decided on their course of action.

They’d listen to any offers the city leaders made them and politely give them their credence. Then they’d thank the town for its generosity and politely decline the offer.

Of course they never once thought the town’s offer might be so generous.

Judge Moore was retired now, but had spent many years on the bench studying the faces of accused people before him, trying to get a hint about their guilt or innocence.

He was very good at reading faces now, and saw that Sarah wasn’t exactly a happy camper.

“I’m sorry if we caught you off guard, Sarah. We certainly didn’t mean to upset you in any way. It’s just that… well, everyone in town has grown quite fond of you. All of you. And we’d really like to convince you to join us and make Blanco your home.”

“Convince, or coerce?”

“Whichever word you choose, dear. Maybe coercion is a better description. But our heart is in the right place.”

“I know it is, Judge. And I’m not angry. It’s just that… well, this is a bit overwhelming.”

“I know it is, honey. We won’t strong arm you, and we won’t rush you for a decision if you want to think about it. We’ll just put the offer out there and let you do what you will with it.

“You don’t mind if I call you honey, do you? Some women do. But I’m an old man and I’ve called pretty ladies honey for many years, and it’s a habit I just can’t break.”

She softened just a tad.

“No, I don’t mind you calling me honey,” she said with a smile. “My grandfather called me honey all the time because it was easier than remembering my name. You remind me of him in a lot of ways.”

“Then he must have been a brilliant and incredibly handsome man.”

She laughed. He’d won her over.

While the four of them made small talk, Beth and Lindsey were in the stables developing their own scheme.

“Beth, I think they’re going to ask us to stay in Blanco and live here in this house.”

“Shut up. Na uh.”

“No, I’m serious. How would you feel about living here instead of going back to San Antonio?”

She pondered the question.

Then, “Honestly, I don’t know. I’ve never lived anywhere else. I was born in San Antonio, and that’s the only house I’ve ever lived in. I don’t know how I’d feel about leaving it.”

“But we haven’t been there in a very long time.”

“I know. But everywhere we’ve been since we left was only temporary. We were just visiting and we always planned to go back. I’ve just never thought that we wouldn’t. Eventually, I mean.”

“So you wouldn’t want to stay in Blanco if we got to live here?”

“I don’t know, Lindsey.
